A slightly more careful study of the Xperia Z5 and conditions of use of the seal led to an interesting discovery. The mobile is waterproof, but some bathroom blow warranty. Explanations.
Since the Xperia Z, Sony boasts that its high-end smartphones are waterproof and able to dive with you (in every sense) to save your memories. But all is not as simple: some swimming, without being dangerous for the smartphone provided you follow a few precautions may void the manufacturer's warranty. This is particularly the case in the sea or in a pool. Curiously, Sony promotes precisely underwater pictures in the official pages dedicated to Xperia Z5.
The pool, yes, but in moderation
As you can see by taking a look at the visuals that accompany this article, Sony is clearly ahead of its smartphones tightness among its most remarkable assets (which is true, for that matter). According to the technical specifications, the notebook IP68 certified, which means it is capable of being immersed in water for 30 minutes. There is no exact indication of depth, IP68 certification stating that the device can be submerged beyond 1 meter. Sony usually indicates 1.5 meters.
However, reading the fine print, you'll notice that there are some limitations as to the nature of water can lead to the cancellation of the guarantee. The smartphone would indeed compatible with freshwater. No pool. No beach. If you decide to go in a pool with (or water is chlorinated), you must restrict the duration of the bath and clean mobile clean water. The duration of the dive is not specified, Sony simply stating the need to "avoid keeping your device in the pool for an extended period." If the mobile is waterproof, why? Because chlorine damages the rubber which ensures the seal of the SIM and microSD slot. Not curious, for a mobile supposedly protected against water?
The beach ? In fact, it is not!
Sony advises that open ports (microUSB and 3.5mm) are exposed to salt water, probably for reasons of corrosion and chemical liquids (such as dishwashing liquid). No shower nor hot, or "sand storm" (while IP5X certification ensures protection against dust). This makes restrictions for a mobile which in the marketing discourse is able to follow the user wherever he goes. And with all the air pollution, it seems surprising that Sony does not recommend the Xperia Z5 out in the rain ...
Sony clearly warns that "any misuse or abuse of the device will void the warranty" and that "the warranty does not cover failures and damages caused by abuse or improper use of your device." Must still more clearly inform customers of limits, whether at the operator, at the distributor or promotional material. For a mobile sent to the Sony service center to have been damaged by water and dust is systematically tested to verify that its IP certification conforms. If this seal is altered, Sony will not play warranty. So you are warned.
