The popularity of the iPhone is undeniable, year after year. The proof is: every year in September, Tim Cook announces new figures on the occasion of the launch of the new smartphone: the iPhone sales increased 35% worldwide and 75% in China. The combined effect of the dealings with the government, to facilitate the marketing of mobile, but also the arrival of PHABLET model.
And it is very logical that we find the same two smartphones we've discovered in 2014, but dressed by the small S distinctive design of a year without renewal. In appearance, the iPhone 6S and 6S Plus are very close to their respective predecessors. Tim Cook and Phil Schiller in play: on the outside, it's the same (with a new colors announced, golden pink already seen in leaks), but what is inside to look out for see some changes.
7000 Aluminium and 3D Touch Screen
Note however that the hull is now Aluminum 7000 alloy that previously were not many secrets for us. It should be certified "anti bendgate". Further, the tempered glass that protects the screen has been renewed. As indicated some indiscretions, the iPhone takes a bit of weight and volume: twenty grams and two small millimeters. Apple obviously did not spread too much on that. It is therefore not possible to know whether this trend is due to the new oleophobic glass, new alloy or other technology.
One of the reasons given by the rumors is the inclusion of Force Touch. The capacity of the touch screen to measure the force of pressure has indeed been formalized. It is called 3D Touch and is used especially to reveal shortcut menus and provide depth in exploring the information on the screen. Open or preview a document, get shortcuts to common actions system applications (Maps, Music, Photos, etc.).
To provide multiple levels of vibration depending on the force transmitted in 3D Touch, Apple renewed the haptic motor, again a possible cause of weight gain. Definition side and size, nothing moves side screen: 4.7 and 5.5 inches on the one hand, 1334 x 750 and 1920 x 1080 pixels of the other part, to resolutions of 324 dots per inch for the iPhone 6S and 401 pixels per inch iPhone 6S Plus.
A9 Chipset, LTE Category 6 and new Touch ID
As announced by Tim Cook, is inside everything changes. The chipset is indeed the A9, third iteration of the chipset home 64-bit, which is, according to leaks, manufactured by Samsung in 14 nm. It is 70% faster while being more energy efficient. Its GPU is 90% more powerful. And is helped by a coprocessor dedicated to environmental signals, the M9 (due to which Siri becomes accessible at all times rather than by pressing the home button).
With the new smartphone chipset gets a new set of network connections: WiFi MiMo ac, LTE Category 6, Bluetooth 4.2, and still the NFC and GPS. Touch ID also improved: the recognition of the footprint would be twice as fast. Answer in our next tests. No information about RAM and battery capacity: it will take to come dissections for information. Note that the proposed storage capacities are the same as last year.
New picture
This is the side of the photo to look out to see the biggest change. The iSight sensor has finally evolved. It now passes to 12 megapixels (against 8 before) and becomes compatible 4K video. As the size of the sensor does not change, the size of each pixel decreases and from 1.5 micron to 1.22 micron. What may seem considerable. The objective however remains the same: 5 elements opening of f / 2.2 and protected by sapphire.
The optical stabilizer is still exclusive to the Plus version, which is amazing. The iPhone 6S more wins besides the passage optical stabilization in video. A new common mode to both models finally appeared: Live Picture, in connection with 3D Touch. This is an animated picture, like Vine or Tumblr. Phil Schiller insists that this is not a video, but a picture ... We will not upset him.
Big changes also in the front with a sensor that Facetime from 1.2 megapixels to 5 megapixels. It remains, however, compatible with 720p video (probably to avoid slowdowns in Facetime with older models), and the goal remains the same. Note that to overcome the lack of flash in the front, Apple had the excellent idea of using the backlight of the screen associated with a backside illumination sensor for white balance. Ingenious.
On sale as of September 25, but more expensive
The iPhone 6S and 6S Plus, which will arrive with new accessories and new hulls, will be pre-orders from 12 September (not Friday, September 11 requires) and will be on sale one week later, on September 25. They will be jointly launched in 12 countries, including France, the United States and China. As for iOS, it will be available September 16 for all iOS devices 8, even the iPhone 4S.
At the time of writing, euro prices have just fallen: 749 euros and 859 euros for the 16GB versions of both models. Or slightly higher prices than last year. The irony is that Phil Schiller said during the keynote that the iPhone would not increase rates this year. He had forgotten that the indexation of its price list is made on the dollar and not the euro. Too bad for our apple (the case to say).
